Flickr has sold-out to SmugMug?

So, Yahoo is hemorrhaging out its photo franchise to SmugMug….Joy.

Back in the Day…Flickr was cool. I even had a paid membership long ago. I even founded a Flickr Group, called NEBRASKA PHOTOGRAPHERS GROUP, and I still manage it, and I add new members when necessary, but I hardly ever add photos to Flickr, and I only add new photos to my group IF, I add photos to Flickr.

Flickr’s one great benefit was the one terabyte storage for free!

SmugMug has been around forever, too. However, there must have been very good reasons for me NEVER TO HAVE CONSIDERED SmugMug, for anything….ever!

The Affect on Flickr Users?

Thus, how will this affect us Flickr users? Will our groups remain intact? Will our follower base remain? Will our Collections remain? Will Flickr, as SmugMug, remain free? Will Flickr users still have one terabyte of space?

At this point…I don’t know. I DON’T have the energy right now to read a lot of convoluted legalese. It is on my To’Do List.

Smug, and, Mug?

I’ve ALWAYS hated the term, “SmugMug”. To me, that brings back too many visions, of the faces of, total jackasses who are arrogant pricks. So, when I hear the the words, smug and mug, together, I think of total jackasses and arrogant pricks. Maybe that is the reason I was never fond of that online photo sharing option.

I suppose I will read up on this “wonderful” merger, and if I see anything ridiculous about it, I will let you know.

Flickr users do have the option to download their photo files, and then delete their accounts, but I’m sure there is a deadline for that.

Good luck. Choose wisely.

Despair, Emotional Trauma, Lesson Received!

You f’ing idiot!

Make a backup of your entire SD card inside your phone or tab, EVERY NIGHT!

So, you may have found out that I’m not good or happy today…endure adversity!

Yeah, f’that!

Enduring adversity is not going to magically make about 7GB of photos, audios, videos, and documents come back into existence. Why the Fúçķ did I not backup my entire SD card to an external HD?!? There’s no need to think about it…fairy dust isn’t going to get my digital files to magically materialise.

The Lesson

EVERY NIGHT BACK-UP YOUR SD CARD THAT IS IN YOUR TAB OR PHONE. Shit Happens, and it happens more so for some of us, than others. So IF your phone miraculously self-melts-down your SD card files, and they completely disappeared, and NO app to reconstruct your SD file system, works, and your only option is to format your SD card, then YOU BETTER F’ING HOPE YOU MADE A BACK-UP, OR BETTER YET, REDUNDANT BACK-UPS!!! SO WHAT, if it takes some time, it will be worth it, especially when you least expect a file system crash, and you’re standing there and pulling out your hair by the handfuls!

What a mess!

I can’t even remember all of the important things on my SD card…but there was, and now, it is all gone.

I know I uploaded some of my latest art photographs to my cloud storage, but not everything.

I had new photographs to work with, and no backups of them, so they are TOTALLY lost. Some of my newest photographs are still on my camera, as NEF files; however, I will need to process all of those NEF files again—that will be a necessary, but waste of time. It is a waste because the files were already processed that way I wanted them processed—now I need to do a rerun.

So in the End…

I DON’T see any good in this episode of this new disaster in my life. Of course, I’ll have to “endure this adversity” but there is NO good that has come out of this. The self-help gurus who preach their lessons of self-improvement, may say, “Oh no, this is actually a good thing, you will grow with understanding and self-awareness and you have learned an important lesson“.

I say: “Holy F! How the hell could I have been so f’ing stupid to not redundantly back-up my SD Card! Why oh why do you do such imbecilic bullshit that causes pain and agony? I need some painkillers….my head is f’ing killing me, and now, I have to reconstruct as much as I can, of my SD card, but most of my most important files are fairy dust now, and flying out into the ether of the digital universe, or Matrix…. Oh Crap!!!”

The End…

We Do the Work, To Do the Art, And Aim for Perfection!

Behind the Lens

Brooks Jensen once said something like,

“We do the work, to do the art, not for any particular financial reward, even though that is important, but because the creative must do the work, with the aim to attain excellence.” (I am paraphrasing, and hope I came close to Jensen’s general idea.)

At first, when I heard him say that, I disagreed—slightly.

I was thinking, we spend all the time doing the artwork, to naturally advance our profession, and as any business venture, to make a profit—that is the reason people have businesses, to make profits.

Yes, making money from all of our hard work creating paintings, jewellery, sculptures, or photographs, is important. It is ESSENTIAL to make money to survive.

Needing to make a profit—I think that is something that most people do not understand about professional and freelance artisans.

We Do the Work, To Do the Art, And Aim for Perfection!

We, LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, need to make money, to make profits from our hard work, our products, and our services. My products are my art-photographs and I REALLY NEED PEOPLE TO PURCHASE FINE ART PRINTS OR GALLERY-QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHIC CANVASES— WHY don’t people understand this simple concept? I need people to hire me and pay me my required services’ fee for whatever photography job is required—WHY don’t people understand the Art Business Sector? It’s similar to all the rest—we all do work with the expectation of being paid for products delivered, or services rendered: Correct!?!

☆ Do Doctor’s work for free? No! Do Electricians work for free? No! Do Plumbers work for free? NO! So why does the general public often feel like Photographers should work for free, or for peanuts? It is ridiculous!

YES! All Artisans work toward perfection in their creations, and profits are not the most important aspect in the creation of artworks; nevertheless, making profits from your hard work, and creating artworks to be sold, is essential to your survival as a businessperson.

THUS, aim for perfection in all your artwork creations; however, NEVER UNDERCUT your value, or you will soon not have a business.

Sammael, Headshot , Fire Portraits by Nawfal

Title: “Sammael, Headshot”.

Creation Date: 16 April 2018.
“Fire Portraits” Series.
Series Years: 2017 – 2018.

Influence: “To Reign in Hell” novel by Steven Brust.

Art Photographs: Photography of fire shaped into Portrait-like imagery, of the characters, angels, in “To Reign in Hell”, written by Steven Brust.

Note 1: After doing the first art photo, I said to myself, “I’m seeing some faces from Brust’s novel in this image, and I need to investigate, and work this out further to see what develops.”

Note 2: One very interesting aspect of Brust’s story is that all of the angels were essentially good until a conflict and deception arose among the angels. On top of that, the three “evil” angels in the story ( evil according to many ‘modernised’ views…modern being several thousand years for Satan/Lucifer/Devil, and hundreds for Mephisto ) — Satan and Lucifer are the same entity, and Mephistopheles is the name invented for the historical Johann Georg Faust (c. 1480–c. 1540), and in demonology, Mephistopheles was “one of the seven chief devils and the tempter of Faust”. Nevertheless, in Brust’s story, Satan and Lucifer are “First-Borns”, and Mephistopheles is an archangel, not devils or demons.

Note 3: My Brust angels are a contradiction because they are made of fire. Angels, “fallen” or not, made of fire, I think is a contradiction.

4) Sammael is a fallen archangel, and the Lord of Destruction. Some think this was Lucifer’s original name.

Samael is often confused with Satan because he often has grim and destructive duties. He is often considered a fallen angel, like Satan and the chief of the evil spirits. One of Samael’s roles in Jewish beliefs is that of the Angel of Death. In this belief, he is a fallen angel but remains one of the Lord’s servants. As a good angel, Samael supposedly lives in the seventh heaven, although he is said to be the chief angel of the fifth heaven. [

Confidence and Being a Photo Stock Library Photographer

How to Keep My Confidence Level at Least Above the 50% Line, is actually a “Little Bit” Difficult for Me, when considering my Escapades in the Realms of Stock Photography.

I never considered my style of Photography, as very Stock Photography suitable.

However, I am a Photographer for a reputable Rights’ Managed, International Stock Library…no need to mention the name. I really respect their business model because they fight to get proper fees for Photographers for Rights’ Managed imagery.

Nonetheless, because my photographic style is “quite abstract”, many of my image submissions are rejected. I had calculated at one time, that about 80% of my photo submissions were rejected—I’m not sure of the reasons, but it would be for either content, or quality issues with the images…or both.

I think that the picky Library policy is good…it is fine…the Library can keep their photo collections at a high level if they are picky about what they accept.

I must consider one thing, my image rejection percentage does absolutely nothing for my Confidence Level, in fact, being who I am, I would say that my Confidence goes down.

And worse yet, I would calculate that my more recent statistics would place me more into the 95% rejection level. And that, my friends does absolutely NOTHING to help my Confidence regarding my work, or my desire to do “Photo-Library” intended work.

It is very troubling for me to feel like all my efforts are wasted, when considering the time it takes to photograph, create, edit, and submit my images to the Library, when there is a 95% chance of rejection. It is kind of like getting slapped in the face every time you do a certain thing, but you do it again anyway, because you think you may get lucky and be accepted…but, in the end you get slapped in the face once again. BUT YOU TRY IT AGAIN AND AGAIN and … AGAIN, and most of the time you end up with one side of your face, or the other, stinging, and apparently, not learning from some mystical lesson that never quite reveals itself to you.

Wow! So what to do?

How the Fúçķ would I know — I’m the guy who keeps repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results. Isn’t that the definition of being a “Crazoid“?

I hope I am not a Crazoid, just because I am being persistent!

So…Oh well, I will continue to submit new photographs to my Stock Library, even though I know that my style may not be “Hip”, or “Cool” Enough, or fit the standard Stock Library cookie cutter shapes and sizes.

Maybe I just suck as a Photographer! I’m still thinking that I may be trapped in some hell-dimension, AI Matrix, or something to that effect.

All I know for sure is that personally, my photo rejection level does completely nothing to help my Confidence Level as a Stock Photography Contributor.

Maybe all of this rejection is supposed to be good for me, LMAOBT! If so, then someone please impart some wisdom to me.

Yeah….so honestly, I don’t think my Photo Stock Library, Photographer, Confidence Level, will be over the 50% line….hardly ever. I don’t like to have false promises, and then, to have them crash all around me. I’m more of a realist, and I see how things are, how the world (of Photography) works, and so I may just need to learn to live with the difficulties of being a Photographer for a Stock Library: I am NOT happy with so much rejection in my life, but that is the reality I face.

☆ Here’s a video showing some of my rejected images.

☆☆[ Please keep in mind that the photographs in this video are low-resolution, cropped screenshots, so DO NOT IMMEDIATELY come to the conclusion that, “Yeah, this guy really does suck as a Photographer — No wonder most of his photographs are rejects — What a Total Buffoon!”

If you want a massive photography challenge, then attempt capturing bats in flight, taken in the black of night.

The following is my first ever capture of a bat in flight, and as an added bonus, a Gecko lizard wanted to get into the photo to add extra interest. I am a little freaked out about the white bat eyes…is that like the “red-eye” effect in humans and other mammals when taking direct flash photography? I’m not sure, but maybe it is.

BAT and Gecko

Bats are fast—REALLY FAST!

To take this, I set my Shutter Speed to the quickest possible to still use with synchronized flash: 1/200th sec. I needed a medium Aperture setting to get a medium depth-of-field (maybe around f.13) to capture my “targets” in relative focus. Objects a few inches in front and behind my prearranged, manual focal point, were in pretty good focus. The Internal Flash was set at +2.0 increased power.

Then….Wait….wait for any bats to enter the frame of the camera’s viewfinder. They are so fast, however, YOU NEED TO START SENDING THOUGHTS OF PUSHING THE BUTTON BEFORE THE BATS ENTER THE VIEWFINDER to HOPE to capture the bats in a photo before they leave the frame!

“Click! Drats! Click! Damn! Click! F!”

“Would you slow down already. Can’t you bats see I’m attempting to take your pictures!”

They failed to slow down. After about five, 10, maybe 15 shots, this was the best I could get.

I thought it was a good exercise. If nothing else, it was good practice using mostly manual settings, and shooting in the dark.

ALWAYS Stuck at 1,600 Subscribers — Am I Stuck in a Twilight Zone Episode?

I am really at odds with the mysterious process of wordpress’s subscribers’s database, IN WHICH, everytime I FINALLY REACH 1,600 subscribers (by email), MAGICALLY, a couple, or a handful of subscribers, unsubscribe…LIKE, WTF!!!!

This has been going on for months.

Is wordpress just f’ing with me?

Is this some sort of game their AI is playing with me?

OR, am I really that much of a dislikeable, unskilled, charlatan, and my Photography Blog(s) are like Cryptonite to people who land on my blog post pages?

Honestly, I have no idea, but it is getting a little bit tiring that every time I seem to make some headway with subscribers, some necromancer-magic ensues, and my subscribers disappear into nothingness.

Maybe after being a Photographist, of one kind or another, for 41 years, I really don’t have any clue about how to make an interesting compostion…aaaaahhhhhhhhhhh………….that must be it.

Photographic Scanography Series Description

The images in this series are new edits of original images created several years ago.
The original photographic scanography was designed using an Epson Perfection 1640SU flatbed scanner.

Various artificial lighting effects were needed to make photographs from my flatbed scanner — leave it to say, Scanography is a very difficult and challenging sub-genre of Photography: Photography being the process of Painting with Light.

This Scanography is a type of Photography that requires having technical skills, having the foresight of being able to use unusual lighting setups without first seeing results, and having lots of patience.

There are only a few images in this series, and that is primarily due to the fact that my flatbed scanner had a catastrophic failure, and I never replaced it to continue these photographic artworks.

The original scanned images were designed around 2003, or, maybe 2004—I don’t quite remember now. The images in this series are new edits of the original photographs.

I was not influenced by anyone to work on this project—It came about because I asked myself, “What kind of photographic results could I achieve by making photographs using my flatbed scanner?” That was it! Having asked the question, I needed to go further and discover new ways to create still-life photography.

It is good that I had created this curiosity in myself….the next obvious step was experimenting with the scanner, and making different lighting configurations, and finding suitable subjects that could make interesting images from a Scanner-Camera.

Series Description:
These artworks are photo-creations of Nawfal Johnson’s original paintings, smoke photography, and also, image creations from photographs captured of decaying urban walls. “Disorderly-Order”, the name of this series, has two distinct meanings. One, there is a method (Order) to the madness (Disorder) in the execution of these artworks. Two, the artist is taking a “more orderly” painting, or a fragment of an urban wall (photographed), and turing it up-side-down, and inside out, to get to the final photographic art representation. The disorderly from within the work, that is the order of the design built into the photographic artwork. Thus, these are ‘two-steps’ artwork creations—first-step, creating a painting (or photographing an urban still-life of a wall); and then, second-step, taking the original creation and designing a final art photograph.
