“DECIMATION” is a word that is often horribly misused, and it drives me Crazy!

A word that is usually misused, and it drives me crazy, is the word, “Decimation”!

People recklessly use “decimation” referring to losses of great numbers of people—that is completely incorrect based on the origins of the word.

The loss of great numbers of people in war, for example, would more properly be referred to as “Annihilation”.

For example, Hannibal Barca (B.c. 247 BC– D. between 183 and 181 BC ), was perhaps the most successful Carthaginian General in ancient history, and was known as “Hannibal the Annihilator”. He was called this for his great ability of wiping out whole armies during battles, for example, the “Battle of Cannae” (2 August 216 BC ), during the Second Punic War (218 to 201 BC ).

“The Battle of Cannae (/ˈkæni, -eɪ, -aɪ/[b]) was a major battle of the Second Punic War that took place on 2 August 216 BC in Apulia, in southeast Italy. The army of Carthage, under Hannibal, surrounded and decisively defeated a larger army of the Roman Republic under the consuls Lucius Aemilius Paullus and Gaius Terentius Varro. It is regarded both as one of the greatest tactical feats in military history and a major defeat for the Roman Army.”

“Battles of Trebia, Lake Trasimene and Cannae[:]

Having recovered from their losses at Trebia (218 BC) and Lake Trasimene (217 BC), the Romans decided to engage Hannibal at Cannae, with roughly 86,000 Roman and allied troops. They massed their heavy infantry in a deeper formation than usual, while Hannibal utilized the double-envelopment tactic. This was so successful that the Roman army was effectively destroyed as a fighting force.”

(Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cannae )

Due to historic writings by Polybius and Livy, it is quite well known that the Battle of Cannae began around noon time, and ended around sundown, approximately six or seven o’clock. Hannibal’s forces ANNIHILATED the Roman army: The Roman army of approximately 70,000 troops, were destroyed and killed, in about six or seven hours—it was a total bloodbath. Annihilation means to destroy everything…everyone. that is different from Decimation.

Decimation is a very ancient term, or concept, and is characteristic of the ancient Roman army’s punishment to reduce or removal of one-tenth, because of treason, or, in cases of abandonment or retreat without orders to do so.

Decimation (n.)

mid-15c., “the paying of tithes,” from Late Latin decimationem (nominative decimatio), noun of action from past participle stem of Latin decimare “the removal or destruction of one-tenth,” from decem “ten” (from PIE root *dekm- “ten”). Earliest sense in English was of a tithe; punishment sense is from 1580s; transferred sense of “much destruction, severe loss” recorded from 1680s. ( https://www.etymonline.com/word/decimation )

The Procedure for Administering Decimation:

“A cohort (roughly 480 soldiers) selected for punishment by decimation was divided into groups of ten. Each group drew lots (sortition), and the soldier on whom the lot fell was executed by his nine comrades, often by stoning or clubbing. The remaining soldiers were often given rations of barley instead of wheat (the latter being the standard soldier’s diet) for a few days, and required to camp outside the fortified security of the camp.”

(Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimation_(Roman_army) )

Thus, cohorts of 480 men each, were then separated into groups of 10. The 10 men drew lots, and the man who lost the drawing, is then stoned, or beaten to death by the other nine men. This was an extremely brutal punishment and had lastly psychological effects on the remaining soldiers to become more disciplined.
The earliest written recording of decimation is by Livy, in 471 BC.

“In an incident where his army had been scattered, consul Appius Claudius Sabinus Regillensis had the culprits punished for desertion: centurions, standard-bearers and soldiers who had cast away their weapons were individually scourged and beheaded, while of the remainder, one in ten were chosen by lot and executed.”

(Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimation_(Roman_army) )

The use of decimation as punishment in the Roman Empire continued for a long time.

“Decimation was still being practised during the time of the Roman Empire, although it was very uncommon. Suetonius records that it was used by Emperor Augustus in 17 BC and later by Galba, while Tacitus records that Lucius Apronius used decimation to punish a full cohort of the III Augusta after their defeat by Tacfarinas in AD 20. G.R. Watson notes that “its appeal was to those obsessed with “nimio amore antiqui moris” – that is, an excessive love for ancient customs – and notes, “Decimation itself, however, was ultimately doomed, for though the army might be prepared to assist in the execution of innocent slaves, professional soldiers could hardly be expected to cooperate in the indiscriminate execution of their own comrades.””
(Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimation_(Roman_army) )

After a time, the practice of decimation was considered too brutal and demoralizing for the Roman troops. Nevertheless, before it would be eliminated as a punishment, it would be revived and used by other Roman army commanders. In 71 BC, during the Servile War with Spartacus, Marcus Licinius Crassus reinstated the punishment of decimation for treasonous behavior during a battle against Spartacus. It is estimated that between 48 to 1,000 men were murdered by decimation, as ordered by Crassus .

Well…”Decimation” is my word that is so misused, and which bugs me, when misused. I think that it has become a habit and an accepted use for “Decimation” to describe the loss of a lot of people, or a major destruction of something. However, I think that is just a bad bastardization of the word.

What misused word drives you crazy?

I’m thinking of dumping EVERYTHING Google: Gmail, GDrive, Everything. I knew they were scumbags, BUT, I had no idea to the extent they seem to be wanting to put the MATRIX into action.

Dumping Google

Here’s the deal, I’m thinking of dumping EVERYTHING Google: Gmail, GDrive, Everything.

I knew they were scumbags, BUT, I had no idea to the extent they seem to be wanting to put the MATRIX into action. I didn’t know that they ATE an AI company that employs at least 700 super AI scientists.

I alreay knew that Google collected every Bit and Byte of data that is sent over the Internet, and I’m sure they have a sweat deal with the See Eye A, and the N S A, and other super secret agencies.

Now, it seems that there is no stopping these powerful monopolies that are in AI, like Google. I think it is only a matter of time before an AI super soldier regiment, or battalion(s) are put into action, and then some prime directive is initiated by the N W O, and then the super soldiers cull the herd, and then the rest who survive the AI-Human War, are then integrated into some massive AI MATRIX. The end of humanity as we know it. Then, the super powerful people who are in this private “club”, the N W O, will have conquered the world! That is one possible future. The other is, of course, that humanity overcomes the N W O threat, and they, proverbially, Storm Frankenstein’s Castle, and conquer the Beast. And then, humanity overcomes the AI threat. That is the better outcome, of course.

A lot of people believe that AI is so great, it can do so much for humans, and it is so fun. That, I feel is an ignorant mentality. The Machines are being made so well, and so fast are the improvements, that humans will become OBSOLETE! “Mr. Wordsworth, you are found to be OBSOLETE! YOU WILL BE LIQUIDATED!” (A close quotation from “The Obsolete Man”, The Twilight Zone.)

However, IF I dump ALL Google, which will be a very difficult task because Google seems to have its TENTACLES into everything Internet–Even things we, the normal people, don’t have any clue about.

I am thinking, “How in the Hell do I save all the GBs of photos and data I have in GDrive. IF I delete all of my Gmail and GDrives, how do I easily transfer all this data to another on-line storage system. How do I know any other on-line source are not in cahoots with the N W O, and all our data is freely shared with these security (s p y ) agencies? I don’t think that there is anyway to know this for sure.

However, do I try to transfer ALL the GBs somewhere else, OR, do I just sacrifice most of it in the deletion of all my Google “stuff”? Good question, and a tough question to ponder.

We are sovereign individuals! What gives these monopolistic AI F&^Ks the right to leach our digital lives–it certainly doesn’t seem right to me–it just seems like another major project in the N W O Big-Plan.

What can I do? What can we do? Well, we start by NOT using as much of the Google crap as possible. I doubt that we, the People, can defeat a MONSTER like Google, but we can reduce the number of users that they have.

If you are an Android user, it will be difficult to go fully anti-Google, as some apps are purposely installed, and are unable to be disabled or uninstalled. However, you can delete the Google app itself, the one that offers the microphone to audio write messages. It is kind of cool, but it is bloatware that steals your unique voice, and they steal your voice and put it in their huge data storage facilities. I can see, in the near-distant future, cyborgs that talk with our voices. Wow! How did Google get the voices for their future cyborgs? They stole your voices when you used their Google app. They not only s p y on the content of what you say, but also they take your individual voice, store it, and who knows what they will do with it in the future, but my cyborg fairytale could come true.

Anyway, read the quotation below, and maybe you will learn something you didn’t know before, about the monster that is Google.

My biggest concern is this: IF I delete my Google acounts, is my COPYRIGHTED, Intellectual Property, really deleted, or is there some super-clause in their Terms of Use, that says, “Yeah sure, you can delete your data from our computers, but it is NOT deleted at all, because you stored your stuff on our computers, we have the right to keep it forever, and use it for anything we want.” I don’t know if that is true or not, but I am supicious, nonetheless.

Have you ditched Google? Please let me know. What so-called “safe” options do you suggest?

“It’s important to realize that Google catches every single thing you do online if you’re using a Google-based feature, and that the data is being used to build powerful personality profiles. As previously reported by Gawker:1

“Every word of every email sent through Gmail and every click made on a Chrome browser is watched by the company. ‘We don’t need you to type at all,’ [Google co-founder Eric] Schmidt once said. ‘We know where you are. We know where you’ve been. We can more or less know what you’re thinking about.’”

How these profiles — with capabilities akin to mindreading — are ultimately put to use is anyone’s guess. The main purpose of this data collection is said to be for marketing purposes, allowing companies to target users with a known interest in certain activities or products. This is bad enough, but the profiles could just as easily be used for more nefarious and liberty-infringing purposes, and we’re already seeing some evidence that this is taking place.

Please also understand that they are the world’s greatest artificial intelligence (AI) company, having purchased Deep Mind for $500 million several years ago. Deep Mind now employs over 700 AI researchers, the largest collection anywhere in the world.” (Source : https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2018/01/24/eliminate-google-from-your-life.aspx?utm_source=dnl&utm_medium=email&utm_content=art1&utm_campaign=20180124Z2&et_cid=DM181472&et_rid=192974490 )

The Photography Influence of my Great Uncle Paul Bader

It is a very sad day, as I learned that my Great Uncle Paul Bader passed away.  He was my late Grandmother’s brother.  I would have to say that Uncle Paul was my earliest influence of the photographic arts.  He photographed weddings, portraits, still-life, and even Pet Photography.  I think his skill photographing animals, was very influential in my Cat Portraits Photography, and in general, the art of photography.  There was a fantastic portrait of my Grandmother’s dog that Uncle Paul took.  That portrait hung on my Grandmother’s wall for as long as I can remember.  It wasn’t just a picture of a dog, it was a majestic-looking Dog Portrait.  That was the type of skill Uncle Paul had in working with a subject, and then designing a great image.
A few years ago, I came up with a plan to capture Uncle Paul’s photography story on audio.  I have always believed audio archives, of family, is important.  I made a very big mistake once, when I lost a cassette tape recording I made of my late Grandfather, Art Yonkey, when I interviewed him for a high school social studies project: I interviewed my Grandfather about his experiences during the Great Depression .  He said so many interesting things on that cassette tape,  but the tape was lost.  The biggest regret is that I cannot hear my Grandfather’s voice, ever again.
I didn’t want to make the same mistake again, so I planned out a way to interview Uncle Paul, but it wasn’t easy.  Here was the process.  I emailed questions to my mother, who then relayed the questions on to Uncle Paul.  He recorded his answers onto cassette tape and sent the cassettes to my mother.  My mother then mailed the cassettes to me here in Malaysia.  Being that I needed the interview to be digitized and put on my computer, I had a bit of a low-tech solution.  I connected my cassette player to my laptop: to do this connection I needed to connect a cable from the cassette player’s earphone jack to the computer’s external microphone jack.  Then, I used Audacity software to record the interview as it played (from the cassette player) on the laptop.  It was a great process, even though it took several steps, with family help along the way.  To keep the finished digital recording safe and out there for others to hear, virtually, forever, I archived the interview at archive dot org, and here is the link.  Click this Link to Hear the Digital Archive of my Interview of my Late Great Uncle Paul Bader, and his Photography Story.

Please have a listen.  I am just glad to have this archived, as I wished I would have been more careful in high school, to see the importance, at that time, to preserve audio of my Grandfather—One very regrettable mistake never to be repeated; but also in the end, there is a success during this sad time, to have preserved my Great Uncle Paul Bader’s photography story archived in digital audio, at archive dot org.

I think I was influenced by my Uncle Paul Bader’s Pet Photography:  These are a sampling of my Cat Portraits, and they are, no doubt, done in my style, but they are inspired by my Great Uncle’s work.

My heart goes out to my Great Aunt Rita, and family, during this time.  Uncle Paul will be missed greatly.

BELIAL, TRANSMOGRAFICATION #8, FIRE PORTRAITS SERIES

Title:  “BELIAL, Transmogrification #8”.

Creation Date: 6 December 17.

“Fire Portraits” Series.

Series Years:  2017 – 2018.

Influence:  “To Reign in Hell” novel by Steven Brust.

Art Photographs:  Photography of fire shaped into Portrait-like imagery, of the characters, angels, in “To Reign in Hell”, written by Steven Brust.

———————
Note 1:  After doing the first art photo, I said to myself, “I’m seeing some faces from Brust’s novel in this image, and I need to investigate, and work this out further to see what develops.”
Note 2:  One very interesting aspect of Brust’s story is that all of the angels were essentially good until a conflict and deception arose among the angels.  On top of that, the three “evil” angels in the story (EVIL, according to many ‘modernised’ views…modern being several thousand years, when concerning Satan/Lucifer/Devil, and hundred of years regarding Mephisto ) — the modern religion viewpoint is that Satan and Lucifer are the same entity, and Mephistopheles is the name invented for the historical Johann Georg Faust (c. 1480–c. 1540).  In demonology, Mephistopheles was “one of the seven chief devils and the tempter of Faust”.  Nevertheless, in Brust’s story, Satan and Lucifer are “First-Borns”, and Mephistopheles is an archangel, not devils or demons.
Note 3:  My Brust angels are a contradiction because they are made of fire.  Angels, “fallen” or not, made of fire, I think is a contradiction.

Series Description:

These artworks are photo-creations of Nawfal Johnson’s original paintings, and also, image creations from photographs captured of decaying urban walls.  “Disorderly-Order”, the name of this series, has two distinct meanings. One, there is a method (Order) to the madness (Disorder) in the execution of these artworks.  Two, the artist is taking a “more orderly” painting, or a fragment of an urban wall (photographed), and turing it up-side-down, and inside out, to get to the final photographic art representation.  The disorderly from  within the work, that is the order of the design built into the photographic artwork.  Thus, these are ‘two-steps’ artwork creations—first-step, creating a painting (or photographing an urban still-life of a wall); and then, second-step, taking the original creation and designing a final art photograph.
