Photography Everyday?

“One question I get asked sometimes is, “Do I do photography everyday?””

“The simple answer is, ‘No’, I don’t photograph subjects everyday.

In fact, sometimes, one, two, or even three weeks may roll by between the actual process of photographing things.

I know, that is ‘BLASPHEMOUS’, some other Photographers may exclaim!

Well, here is my reasoning: IF, I photographed everyday, I would never get to the actual creation of Art Photographs that I do, and my photographic art pieces do take (considerable) time to complete.

I already have a backlog of RAW images that I need to edit and work with. Maybe other Photographers need to be photographing everyday, but I don’t! I already have enough RAW images I need to work with, and I can only do that if I am at my desk, working with those images on my TAB (or a computer) and doing the ACTUAL creative work to design images for my various series.

So, ‘No’ is the answer to that question. When I run low on RAW image files, or, if I just want to go take pictures, then, I grab my camera and hit the streets to find new subject matter. Nevertheless, I am always composing images in my mind, and photographing images in my mind as I walk around: It is a habit for me.

☆ I do always carry my camera with me, as that is PHOTOGRAPHY’S FIRST CARDINAL RULE: ‘ALWAYS HAVE YOUR CAMERA WITH YOU’!

However, that does not mean that I always take my camera out and capture photographs for nothing. In my opinion, a subject REALLY needs to POP-OUT at me and grab my attention, or look VERY interesting for me to compose a picture with my camera. It is just the way I am now, with my photography.

“The term Milky Way is a translation of the Latin via lactea, from the Greek γαλαξίας κύκλος (galaxías kýklos, “milky circle”). From Earth, the Milky Way appears as a band because its disk-shaped structure is viewed from within. Galileo Galilei first resolved the band of light into individual stars with his telescope in 1610. Until the early 1920s, most astronomers thought that the Milky Way contained all the stars in the Universe. Following the 1920 Great Debate between the astronomers Harlow Shapley and Heber Curtis, observations by Edwin Hubble showed that the Milky Way is just one of many galaxies. The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy with a diameter between 150,000 and 200,000 light-years (ly). It is estimated to contain 100–400 billion stars. There are probably at least 100 billion planets in the Milky Way. The Solar System is located within the disk, 26,490 (± 100) light-years from the Galactic Center, on the inner edge of the Orion Arm, one of the spiral-shaped concentrations of gas and dust. The stars in the innermost 10,000 light-years form a bulge and one or more bars that radiate from the bulge. The galactic center is an intense radio source known as Sagittarius A*, likely a supermassive black hole of 4.100 (± 0.034) million solar masses.”

CRACKED, CHIPPED, and ROUGH, is an abstract look at a very mundane subject—old, cracked, chipped, and peeled paint on walls eBook by Nawfal Johnson Nur

CRACKED, CHIPPED, and ROUGH, is an abstract look at a very mundane subject—old, cracked, chipped, and peeled paint on walls.

What is revealed in this abstract photography collection are the macro-details of old painted surfaces. In my eyes, the joy of this type of macro photography is looking at, and seeing, the fine details of cracks in old paint; wondering how the curled ends of paint have lost its adhesive qualities; and, creating the pictorial illusion of texture in the two dimensional image. This may sound weird, but when someone looks at my cracked paint images, I want the rough textures of the paint, and the wall, to reach out and scratch your eyes! Not in a violent sort of way, but I want you so say, “Wow, I can feel the roughness of this scene when I see these images.” The primary effect I wanted to show with these photographs is the illusion of three-dimensional space. CRACKED, CHIPPED, and ROUGH is a collection of 15 black & white, and color images, in 22 pages.

As an Indie Artist or Author, if you don’t Blow Your Own Horn, No one Will, SHELLS AND SANDSTONE EBOOK BY NAWFAL JOHNSON NUR

SHELLS & SANDSTONE (2013) fine art photography book by Nawfal Johnson Nur

Yes, it is true, if you are an “indie” artist or author, you will have to ‘blow your own horn’, because no one else will — those are the facts — Jack!

So, occasionally, I will list my books here at my blog, so perhaps, someone will be interested in purchasing a copy.  This one will certainly make a nice, artsy addition to your PDF EBOOK reading collection.

This first book, SHELLS & SANDSTONE, is 34 pages, and it is a collection of my black and white photographs of, you guessed it, shells and sandstone from Penang beaches.

Here’s a link to the sale’s page, and a screenshot of the book cover and description.

Please have a look — thank you!

IRITIS ABSTRACTS SERIES THE IRITIS COLLECTION by NAWFAL JOHNSON

The IRITIS ABSTRACTS Series – THE IRITIS COLLECTION 2013

Collection:  THE IRITIS COLLECTION.
Collection History:  Sept – Nov 2013.
Series Title:  IRITIS ABSTRACTS.
Series Number:  3.
Works in Series:  Three.

This has nothing to do with my series, IRITIS ABSTRACTS, but I just realized that I have crossed over 100,000 Views for my blog – DING! – 100,070 to be exact.  I don’t know if that is anything big, probably not since some photographers get 50,000 or more visits to their website or blog every month (e.g., Joe McNally).

OK, I guess for me it is a big deal since I have no fame.  Thus, for this unknown Photographic Artist it is pretty good, and I WASN’T going to say “Emerging Photographic Artist“.  I’m not even sure what “Emerging” means?

What is that…”Emerging?”

When I hear “Emerging” and “Artist” used in the same sentence I automatically visualize someone coming out of the ground, like some creature from beyond “emerging” from the tombs of the deep, or something like that.  I get shivers when I see that hand with the dirty, cracked fingernails sticking out of the ground, and maybe a finger bone showing where skin used to be, ARGH!  Yeap:  that picture pretty much freaks me out.  So anyway…Why not just refer to lesser-known artists as…Artists?

And, I’ve been bothered by something else (so many things really, but this stands out).  Why do Photographers always have to tell you that they are “Photographers”?  In addition, Photographers usually must place the word “Photography” on their works, and websites, and it must also be in the URL of their Internet address.  Let’s use Billy Bob as our example:  he would naturally put, “Billy Bob Joe Briggs Photography.”  And I must ask:  “Why is that?”

Isn’t it obvious that when you are looking as a photograph, the viewer already knows it is a photograph?  And, wouldn’t the artisan who created the photograph be a “photographer”?  It is implied and somewhat obvious that when you see a photograph, the viewer already knows a Photographer made the work.

Painters don’t go around labeling their works with:  Billy Bob Joe Briggs  –  Painter.  Painters sign their name…only…and maybe their name and the year the work was done.  I’m not sure why this bothers me, but it does for some reason.  Just think if Painters did the same thing throughout history:

“GROG – Cave Painter – 4,000 BC – Check out my Cave Woman Etchings!”
“Van Gogh – Master Painter – ‘Good Grief!  Couldn’t people have seen what a talent I was when I was alive – for God’s Sakes!!!'”
“van Dyck – Master Painter – Check out the awesomeness of my subjects’ clothing in the paintings!”
“John Singer Sargent – Just Master Painter.”

You see:  Painters throughout time never did that!

And, I’m not sure where this is coming from, but here’s a quote you can live by:

Don’t believe everything you see on the Internet.”
Abraham Lincoln (said that – and Honest Abe was one smart cookie!  🙂   )

So, we have Billy Bob and his various professional occupations:

Billy Bob Joe Briggs – Plumber.

Billy Bob Joe Briggs – Brain Surgeon.

Billy Bob Joe Briggs – Gynecologist.

Billy Bob Joe Briggs – Rocket Scientist.

Billy Bob Joe Briggs – Photographer.

“Billy Bob Joe Briggs – Dude with a Mechanical and Electrical Device Used to Capture Light that Reflects off of everything to one degree or another to create visual representations of what the device is pointing at.”

Ah-Ha!  Maybe I could put that one on my photos, and also register that as my new URL!  Well, note to self:  Replace your name in place of Billy Bob’s.

Who cares…

I don’t care:  Really!  My whole way of seeing things is royally-fracked up now anyway [yes, I am a fan of the newest rendition of Battlestar Galactica.   What happened to the NEW series in the BG franchise, the prequel, “BLOOD & CHROME”?

I’m a bit grumpy now.  I guess I’m having trouble getting use to a new-normal.

“George!  Wipe that dirt off your face, man, come on this is a portrait session!  Oh wait, sorry George, the dirt is in my eyeball, my apologies.  Let’s continue.  CAN SOMEONE PLEASE GET ME SOME BUG SPRAY, THESE DAMNED MOSQUITOES ARE DRIVING ME FRICK’EN INSANE!”

  • Have you ever listened to Wolfgang’s “Requiem” at 6AM?  It seems very lively.  I should have that as my alarm in the morning.

But that is nothing compared to NEVERMORE‘S “This Godless Endeavor.” which is, in my opinion, the best Metal album ever recorded.

BORN – by Nevermore.

NEVERMORE – “BORN”
Track 1 from the album “THIS GODLESS ENDEAVOR.”
Video is Live at WACKEN 2006.
And it gets heavier thereafter.

Now for the IRITIS ABSTRACTS Series:

BUT FIRST….

Have you ever had one of those, “Where the hell is my razor?” mornings?

Well, I’m living it right now.  So, where the hell is my razor?  It was RIGHT HERE yesterday!

Yeah:  Have you ever noticed that when you lose something, that it was ALWAYS “RIGHT HERE” before you lost it.

Where is “Right Here,” exactly?

Well, it must be right here, that’s where I left it!”  You motion with wild-flinging arm gestures.

Please let me explain the meaning of, “Right Here“:  “Right Here” is,  anywhere in the house:  Not outside, but inside the house.

No, TO BE TOTALLY HONEST, Yesterday, I took my razor outside and buried it in the front yard, as I normally do, and to be on the safe side, I stuck a huge wooden stake in the ground, in the place where I safely buried my razor.  I also use that sharp wooden stake to poke at any EMERGING Artist Zombies who are waiting to stick their dirty-fingernail’ed hands out of the dank and musty earth to grab me – eat my brains – and then naturally, I transform into an Emerging Artist Zombie!  You see – I have the whole thing planned out.  Well, you fail to plan, and thus, plan to fail.  Not this time, NO SIREE BLUB!  I got this whole zombie global take-over thing all figured out.

THAT BEING THE CASE:  NO, I NEVER take my razor OUT THERE for safe keeping, because the dirty-hand will likely take my razor and I’ll never see it again.

So, “Right Here” means inside the house…somewhere…not outside…outside is, “OUT THERE“…NOT “Right Here!”

So, we have established that I left my razor, “Right Here,” not “Out There.”

And, it is also obvious that it is not my fault, “Someone Else” misplaced my razor!

So, “Someone Else” misplaced, lost, or stole my razor that was clearly placed “Right Here,” and not “Out There”…somewhere.

Hummmmmm……

After hours upon hours upon hours of lost energy spent searching with no results, you then fall into a Gollum-Rage:  “Where is My Precious!”  You scream!

And then, you obviously fall over the lip’s edge of a volcano’s mouth, and die in a very fiery and painfully quick death.  Or not…..

Well, it could happen…nothing is impossible you know.

So, where was I…

Oh, yes, the “IRITIS ABSTRACTS” Series…here they are (and THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS TO ME WHEN I GET UP TOO EARLY IN THE MORNING….rambling nonsense…………).

BENDING SPACE, A NEW ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES

BENDING SPACE, 3MAY2012, Edit B, by Nawfal Johnson Nur

BENDING SPACE, 3MAY2012, Edit B, by Nawfal Johnson Nur

My “BENDING SPACE” Photography Series is loosely inspired by ‘String Theory’.

My understanding of String Theory is very limited, but that does not stop me from being somewhat fascinated by the idea:  A theory of, in most basic imagery, reminds me of vibrating rubber-bands.  And some scientists believe String Theory can possibly explain the behavior of the Universe.

String Theory is very complex and I will not even attempt to say that I understand the complexity of this theory.  Being a photographic artist, my main objective is taking the information I do know about this theory, and attempting to translate it into imagery that satisfies my creative soul; and also, I hope my work sparks the imagination of those who view it.

When I think of String Theory, I think of vibrating light bands, waves in vapor, all the colors an eye can interpret, and the bending of space.  Could my visualization of bending space be like the ‘branes‘ discussed in String Theory?  I don’t know.  I can only guess.

Nevertheless, my job as a photographic artist was to, in this case, with this photography collection, to design photographs to interpret a theory:  String Theory.  How did I do this?  Well, I had to have some influence…some inspiration that would spark a process of creation.

Here was my inspiration and process:  I was watching the TV show, “The UNIVERSE,” and it was an episode talking about the ‘Big Bang’.  At some point in the show, String Theory was being discussed and the graphics used to illustrate the ‘strings’ were these bouncing bands of light.

Bands of light.  Big Bang.  Space.  Light.  Color.  Yes, the cogs in my brain got unstuck and ideas were churning.

I like the idea of ‘Bending Space,’ ” I thought to myself.  “How about designing a small collection of images that are my interpretation of ‘bending space’ and ‘String Theory.'”  I needed two ingredients for my collection of images:  Bending Space images, and Lots of Color.

For the Bending of Space ingredient, I photographed, macroscopically, light through glass.  For the Color ingredient, I photographed small portions of some of my abstract expressionism paintings.  The resulting BENDING SPACE images are an amalgam of these ingredients.

My Direction – My Motivation – The Photographer’s Solution

Proper Interpretation is the solution for the problems faced for almost any type of Photography assignment, isn’t it:  An Editor, Art Director, or even the nervous bride’s mother explaining to the Photographer what kind of photograph she wants – that is the “problem” (you can substitute the word ‘problem’ with ‘issue’ or even ‘opportunity’).  I use the word, ‘problem‘ because Photographers are ‘Problem Solvers’.  Clients have imagery problems:  They need a specific image (or images) for some reason.  They hire Photographers to create a solution (an image) to solve their problem.

How close did I come to matching my visuals (my abstract art pieces) to the ideas expressed in String Theory?  I don’t know:  String Theory is a very advanced mathematical theory – it is not based on physical experimentation.  Although, I came across an article, http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/09/stringy-quantum/ , where the math of String Theory was used for predictions of ‘quantum entanglement‘.  What does that mean?  I don’t know.

“DAMN’IT JIM!  I’m not a Physicist.  I’m an Art Photographer!”

So, without further delay, the eight images in the “BENDING SPACE” Photography Collection are presented, below.

ETHEREAL DREAMS & HOPE – THIRD EDITION

ETHEREAL DREAMS & HOPE: a Photographic Collection with Words to Boost Your Spirit - Third Edition, by Nawfal Johnson Nur

ETHEREAL DREAMS & HOPE: a Photographic Collection with Words to Boost Your Spirit - Third Edition, by Nawfal Johnson Nur

My New Book, Smoke Art, Arthritis and Depression

What does Smoke Art Photography, Arthritis and Depression all have in common?  Well, these are the main topics inside my new book (just published earlier today)!

The description in the photo caption (above) gives a really good indication of my book’s content.

  • My book shows 34 of my smoke art photographs, the Ethereal Dreams & Hope Collection, which includes photos taken between 2007 and June 2011.

Because I have suffered with arthritis for many years, a little over 30 years now, and have coped with long bouts of depression, I wanted this book project to be more than just a book of photographs.  I wanted to mix in words of hope, and together the photos and the words of hope make up this project.

  • I discuss a little about my beginnings with photography.  I also discuss very general details about ankylosing spondylitis, and depression.  I talk about some of my own personal experiences finding out that I have these conditions, and some story about dealing with these medical issue.

Over all, I just want to offer my book as a way to help other people dealing with pain and despair, a way to see things in terms of ‘hope’, and to stress the importance of ‘action’ to make ‘hopes,’ ‘dreams,’ and ‘goals’ to come true.

  • If nothing else comes out of my book, I will be very happy if someone, somewhere, has gotten some reassurance from my words, that things can be better even when living with pain and sadness.  It does not always have to be this way, but much of the effort will be up to you.

Perhaps by reading my book, this can be a small step, at least to see things in terms of ‘hope.’  You may also like seeing my photographs of smoke art – and that would be a real added bonus.

Thank you and take care!
