Photography Everyday?

“One question I get asked sometimes is, “Do I do photography everyday?””

“The simple answer is, ‘No’, I don’t photograph subjects everyday.

In fact, sometimes, one, two, or even three weeks may roll by between the actual process of photographing things.

I know, that is ‘BLASPHEMOUS’, some other Photographers may exclaim!

Well, here is my reasoning: IF, I photographed everyday, I would never get to the actual creation of Art Photographs that I do, and my photographic art pieces do take (considerable) time to complete.

I already have a backlog of RAW images that I need to edit and work with. Maybe other Photographers need to be photographing everyday, but I don’t! I already have enough RAW images I need to work with, and I can only do that if I am at my desk, working with those images on my TAB (or a computer) and doing the ACTUAL creative work to design images for my various series.

So, ‘No’ is the answer to that question. When I run low on RAW image files, or, if I just want to go take pictures, then, I grab my camera and hit the streets to find new subject matter. Nevertheless, I am always composing images in my mind, and photographing images in my mind as I walk around: It is a habit for me.

☆ I do always carry my camera with me, as that is PHOTOGRAPHY’S FIRST CARDINAL RULE: ‘ALWAYS HAVE YOUR CAMERA WITH YOU’!

However, that does not mean that I always take my camera out and capture photographs for nothing. In my opinion, a subject REALLY needs to POP-OUT at me and grab my attention, or look VERY interesting for me to compose a picture with my camera. It is just the way I am now, with my photography.

As an Indie Artist or Author, if you don’t Blow Your Own Horn, No one Will, SHELLS AND SANDSTONE EBOOK BY NAWFAL JOHNSON NUR

SHELLS & SANDSTONE (2013) fine art photography book by Nawfal Johnson Nur

Yes, it is true, if you are an “indie” artist or author, you will have to ‘blow your own horn’, because no one else will — those are the facts — Jack!

So, occasionally, I will list my books here at my blog, so perhaps, someone will be interested in purchasing a copy.  This one will certainly make a nice, artsy addition to your PDF EBOOK reading collection.

This first book, SHELLS & SANDSTONE, is 34 pages, and it is a collection of my black and white photographs of, you guessed it, shells and sandstone from Penang beaches.

Here’s a link to the sale’s page, and a screenshot of the book cover and description.

Please have a look — thank you!

All Rights Reserved. Penang, Malaysia. WEB: https://smokephotographist.wordpress.com "MIRRORED ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY" is a collection of colour and Black & White, abstract images that are designed with a mirrored effect. Sometimes the mirrored image is an exact opposite-duplicate for both sides. However, in some cases, one half is ALMOST a mirrored duplicate - with a few compositional differences. At times, my final artwork will resemble what seem mysterious forms and ominous images, even scary, or evil representations. Nevertheless, the viewer of my portfolio can decide for themselves what they see in these MIRRORED ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY images.

This is my ‘Dark Period’.
These are dark times….
The sun is engulfed by gloom.
A gloom that is a bottomless pit.
Anyone who has never been to this place will never understand it.
Anyone who has been there, will surely sympathize, because they will understand the demons that haunt and the blackness that spreads with every cell division in your body.
And it feels like you are alone – no one gives a flying shit about you or the pain you face; they care neither about your physically caused pain, nor the mental struggles that keep you locked up like a prisoner in your own shell of a skin.
You feel like shouting at the world, but your shouts come out with only silence because there are none who care…none who give a damn.
Joy…What is Joy?  Joy has abandoned me – you too will understand this if you have lived through this hell:  Depression  is a bottomless pit of gloom, misery, a soul-energy-wasting demon that never sleeps.  Evil is busy – it never sleeps….it never sleeps.

~ Nawfal Johnson ~

People tell and advise you never to expose negative thoughts and feelings about yourself, for God sakes never do that, or possible clients and employers will see it and they will shun you like you are Typhoid-Mary!  Probably true.  Well, F’that!  I am just an expressive artist who is having the worst shit of a time in my entire life, at 49, and nothing I do seems to be working or helping.

However, when did art not become an expressive way of expressing yourself?  When did poetry or writing NOT become a personal expression of life, your life as it is today when you write it?

If I had a theme song in my life right now, that I could just put on repeat, it would be Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb.”  But they would need to change it to “Un-Comfortably Numb” to fit better.

Have been lax in my blog posting …

Hi Friends!

I have been quite lax in my frequency of posting new art photography.  I’m so caught up in ‘attempting’ to design a new Art Photography Profile, that it is bogging me down to all ends of the Earth.

I hope to do better about keeping up with you all and also adding more blog posts.  Necessity is  forcing me to put together a new CV and Profile because of my cut from the contract work at the Aussie University I had been doing work for 15-years.  Consequently, starting new and fresh at the age of 49, is no easy chore, especially when younger people are also out there looking for opportunities.

I wish I could survive on my artwork and art photography alone, but it is not possible – no where near possible.  I am not sure what the future holds – it is all oblivious and I just feel like I am in a constant haze of drowsiness and blue funk. Being the owner of Ankylosing Spondylitis makes this task 10 times more difficult for me!

With these current events and the life I’m surrounded by, is it any wonder that is why most of my new artwork is so hazy, dark, and chaotic – it is my mind at this time.  It is not confusing why my art photography is such, at this time, and if you are close to me, then you already know that I have had trouble, long-term trouble with deep depression and GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) – and I battle this with all my will, and through my art I try to exorcise these demons that infest my spirit.

I hope to get through this with more positive results.  I appreciate my friends here who have given me strength and encouragement to move forward.  It is somewhat appropriate that one of my favourite quotes is from Brooks Jensen:  “Even if you are falling on your face, at least you are moving forward!”  My face does hurt a lot, so maybe subconsciously, I am failing a lot, but at least I am falling forward as I hurt myself.  I just hope I am learning from my many mistakes and just don’t repeat them too many times.

Wishing you all, my friends, all the best, and please pray for me and help me with encouragement to not give up hope.

I know there must be some positive change for me sometime, somewhere, in the future.  One thing is sure – as long as I have even a single colour pencil left in my art box, I will continue making and creating my artwork.  That is a promise and a MUST! At least I do find some happiness in designing artwork.

Take care, my friends,

Nawfal

Death Grounds, v.7 (2005 version) by Nawfal Johnson

Death Grounds, v.7 (2005 version) by Nawfal Johnson

OFF WORLD – ALIEN LANDSCAPES : Art Photography Science Fiction Series

Death Grounds, v.7 (2005 version), is part of an On-Going Photography Project, titled, “Off World – Alien Landscapes.”

This photograph is also part of a publication, an e-Folio book of the same name, “OFF WORLD – ALIEN LANDSCAPES.”

This project consists of mixed media art creations designed for creating a final photograph. The themes are of an alien-nature; or considering that point, the themes are what we usually think of when we visualize ‘alien’ from what we know from movies and TV shows that are ‘alien-themed.’ I suppose that if ‘aliens’ were to visit Earth, we and our culture, and our planet would be ‘alien’ to them. I believe the term ‘alien’ is a personal viewpoint and perspective based on our personal experiences and knowledge.

My motivations for the “OFF WORLD – ALIEN LANDSCAPES” photography series comes from being inspired by my favourite Science Fiction TV shows; and my favourites are probably in this order: 1) Stargate Universe (2009 – 2011); 2) Deep Space Nine (1993 – 1999); 3) Star Trek Voyager (1995 – 2001); 4) Babylon 5 (1993 – 1998); and, 5) SPACE ABOVE & BEYOND (1995-1996).

The “OFF WORLD – ALIEN LANDSCAPES” photographic art series is an On-Going Series, and I usually design and create one art piece a year, sometimes two pieces, for this series. Therefore, it is a slow-growing photography series. Nevertheless, it is probably the most difficult art series I have endeavoured to make because it deals with mixed media creations constructed before the photograph can be captured.

Even though the title is “ALIEN LANDSCAPES,” there are just as many, if not more, ‘alien seascapes in this series. For my purposes, I am not concerned with this bit of semantics—whether the scene is on land or at sea, the main point is that the scene is of an ‘alien-nature,’ and that is what is important in my viewpoint.

FOOTSTEPS IN THE SAND, OFF WORLD – ALIEN LANDSCAPES

SCI-FI ART PHOTOGRAPHY – FOOTSTEPS IN THE SAND, OFF WORLD – ALIEN LANDSCAPES

Title: "FOOTSTEPS IN THE SAND, v3, Edit F." Series: OFF WORLD - ALIEN LANDSCAPES. Series History: 2001 to Present (On-Going). The question I always want to ask myself when I look at this art piece is this: "Who made these footprints in the sand?" Then, I'm led to the question: "Where is this?" Because this is part of my "OFF WORLD - ALIEN LANDSCAPES" Photographic Art Series, then, I ask myself, "The footprints appear human-like, but this is somewhere else...some other planet, so what do these people, aliens...creatures really look like?" "Is this a beach, or is this some rocky desert-planet that has been abandoned by its inhabitants?" Of course, I am asking that you use your imagination, and that requires you to ask questions for yourself about what you see.

DO NOT LEAVE HOME WITHOUT CHARGING YOUR CAMERA BATTERY – LESSON LEARNED

"Only One Shot, Edit B." For real - I only got off one shot before my battery went dead. Again, another lesson learned about fully charging batteries before going out to do some photography. This is the only shot I took on that day, when my battery ran out of juice.

CLOUDS PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES & This Blog – Behind the Lens

So, why the double-up on the CLOUDS #6912, Edit B, at this blog.  Well, here’s the answer:  The “autofocus” theme is a bit odd.  To get the image that I feature in my blog posts to show up on the main page of my photo-blog, I had to run through a few hoops to do it.  Using the “New Post” quicky button does not work – the images don’t show on the front page – only the titles of the blog appear.  To get my photos to show up on the front page, I have to go to my dashboard; go to the Posts (Show All) option; and then select the “Add New” post option.  Basically, you have to add a post using the “old’en” way method.  That kind of defeats the purpose of WP New Post quick options, but I prefer if people can see my photos on the main blog page.  So, that is the answer to the above question – why the double-up on the CLOUDS #9612 post image.

Now, I will Publish this and the photo of CLOUDS #9612, should, crossing my fingers, show up.
