The Father of Photography according to John Werge (1890).

“Charles William Scheele was born at Stralsund, Sweden, December 19th, 1742, and died at Koeping, on lake Moeler, May 21st, 1786. He was the real father of photography, for he produced the first photographic picture on record without camera and without lens, with the same chemical compound and the same beautiful and wonderful combination of natural colours which we now employ. Little did he dream what was to follow.”

About Clotho:

Clotho (/ˈkloʊθoʊ/; Greek: Κλωθώ) is one of the Three Fates or Moirai who spin (Clotho), draw out (Lachesis) and cut (Atropos) the thread of Life in ancient Greek mythology. Her Roman equivalent is Nona. Clotho was responsible for spinning the thread of human life. She also made major decisions, such as when a person was born, thus in effect controlling people’s lives. This power enabled her not only to choose who was born, but also to decide when gods or mortals were to be saved or put to death. For example, Clotho brought Pelops back to life when his father boiled and killed him.” (Source: Wikipedia.org/wiki/clotho)

The Series Style: Non-Geometric, Delineated, Abstract, Figurative.

—————
This is a three piece series. It is of a “Non-Geometric, Delineated, Abstract, Figurative, style. The three art photographs of this series are my representation of the Greek mythological Fates: Lachesis, Clotho, and Atropos. There was no particular spark of influence to do this series. I am a student of Ancient Greek History, and Mythology, and I wanted to do a series of the Fates in my personal style: Non-geometric, Delineated Abstract.

☆ These artworks are mixed medium—a combination of Alcohol, Oil, and Water based ink dyes. The original material is 135 gsm art paper, and the final material is digital photography.

Take Inventory of Photography Equipment, FIVE Times, the night before a photo-gig .

I WOULD SAY THAT BEING O.C. (Obsessive-Compulsive) TO A LIMITED DEGREE, IS A GOOD THING FOR A PHOTOGRAPHER.

I am typically O.C.. I check things twice, or three times, if not more.

On the rare occasion, I slack off a little, thinking I can let my guard down, and trust that I checked EVERYTHING carefully.

● THAT IS WHEN YOU GET BIT ON THE ARSE!

I have been photographing food this week.

I DON’T usually need my studio lights for my art photography work. However, since I’m using artificial studio lighting to photograph the food samples, I remind myself that I need to be mindful of all the equipment I need. Studio lighting has parts and pieces. You need all of those parts and pieces to use the lighting properly, or to better effect.

Here’s the question:

So what happens if you FORGET to take a part or piece of studio lighting equipment?

The Answer:

Sometimes, you are completely screwed!

Yesterday, I had thought my O.C. was in proper working order. It wasn’t. The lights I use, which use the BOWENS system for attaching light modifiers, to the light modifier connector, which is on the strobe housing, was incomplete—I was missing a very important connecting ring.

A BIG PROBLEM ARISES:

In all the O.C.’ness of things, I had an O.C.-catastrophic-failure! I failed to notice, two or three times in taking equipment inventory, that I was missing my light modifier-metal-O’Ring-Connector!

“GREAT-FARCKING-GRIEF !” I screamed in my head. NOT wanting the client to know that I was in panic mode, I calmly, well, not so calmly, thrashed around in my lights’ bag, and that god-Damned connector was really missing.

The god of O.C.’ness totally F’ed me over!

So, with too many thoughts racing around in my scrambled brain, I went over to my light and softly whispered, “Please DON’T fuck with me any more today….please!

I set up my light hoping the client was not catching on that I was ad-lib’ing things from that point onward.

I preferred, I mean, I would have MUCH PREFERRED using a big soft-box for the job, but that wasn’t going to happen!

The Solution:

So, I bare-bulbed the light, and threw a big translucent cloth in front of the light, to soften the light before hitting the subject.

Over all, I created more trouble and stress for myself. But in the end, things worked out fine, with no-one any much wiser…except me, who will need to O.C., inventory my photography equipment bags FIVE times the night before an assignment.

P.S.

This was by far, NOT THE WORST PHOTOGRAPHY NIGHTMARE BLUNDER, of my photo-gig-life!

LMAO! Photo-Gig Blunders are downright depressing, humiliating, scary, embarrassing, and career-damaging, IF you don’t ADAPT AND IMPROVISE QUICKLY, and find an almost instant workable solution, to cover your Photo-Gig Blunder, you will have big troubles. You don’t want to stand there like the proverbial, “Deer in the Headlights”.

As, Balista, the WARRIOR OF ROME, would say, “Don’t think, just act!” (from , Dr. Harry Sidebottom’s EPIC story, WARRIOR OF ROME Series).

Yes, at that point, when Photo Blunders hit you, you best hit back right away, with a preformulated solution that solves the problem, even if it isn’t a great solution, as long as it works.

You can save face, and possibly, your photo-reputation, if you can come up with a workable solution quickly.

I certainly know the pain of photo-gig failures. You may too. I won’t mention my worst photo-gig blunder…at least not in this blog post. I’ll save that story for another photo-lesson.

√ It is often best to learn from other Photographers’ failures, blunders, DISASTERS, and then hopefully you don’t make the same mistakes.

Libertas — Liberty…Freedom.

Artist’s Statement :

As with all of my abstract artworks , especially my Ambidextrous Abstract Expressionism Photography images, the viewer has “Libertas” to interpret the images as they see fit.

As soon as I finished this artwork, I saw a king-like figure with outstretched arms, and a crown on top of its head.

There is no other more known king during The Crisis of the Third Century, as Valerian. Thus, I titled this artwork, Valerian. It must be quite a shock to go from king to slave in a day, but that is essentially what happened to Valerian, when Shapur I, king of kings, and his barbarian Persians, defeated the Roman army at Edessa (AD 260):

The Battle of Edessa took place between the armies of the Roman Empire under the command of Emperor Valerian and Sassanid forces under Shahanshah (King of the Kings) Shapur I in 260.
(Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Edessa )

It was the first time a Roman Emperor had been taken captive — Worse yet, turned into a slave. The entire Roman army of 70,000 men were killed or captured. It was a mind-numbing defeat for the Empire. Valerian died while being a captive of Shapur I. Some of the Roman troops were integrated into Persian society, under pressure probably, to put their Roman engineering (and other) skills to use. It is unclear if Valerian lived in peace under Shapur, or if his life was torturous—there are accounts of both, but historical sources should be questioned before coming to any conclusions.

☆ I have a very real suspicion that some ancient historical sources of information come from crackpot, ANCIENT FAKE NEWS sources, like an Ancient version of CNN (the Clown News Network). I think whoever was ruling at the times when histories were written, also pushed their own biases, and sometimes, far flung fake news narratives. Fake News, Paradigm shifts, Carefully Scripted Narratives of what is allowed in the framework of writing histories. And always, the winners of wars, controlled the narrative.

—————

Publius Licinius Valerianus Augustus:

Valerian (/vəˈlɪəriən/; Latin: Publius Licinius Valerianus Augustus; 193/195/200 – 260 or 264), also known as Valerian the Elder, was Roman Emperor from 253 to 260 AD. He was taken captive by Sassanian Persian king Shapur I after the Battle of Edessa, becoming the first Roman Emperor to be captured as a prisoner of war, causing shock and instability throughout the Empire.”

(Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerian_%28emperor%29 )

—————

“The Crisis of the Third Century, also known as Military Anarchy or the Imperial Crisis (AD 235–284), was a period in which the Roman Empire nearly collapsed under the combined pressures of invasion, civil war, plague, and economic depression. The crisis began with the assassination of Emperor Severus Alexander by his own troops in 235, initiating a 50-year period during which there were at least 26 claimants to the title of emperor, mostly prominent Roman army generals, who assumed imperial power over all or part of the Empire.” (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crisis_of_the_Third_Century)

—————

INFLUENCE — THE CRISIS OF THE 3RD CENTURY PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES :

I was inspired to create this Abstract Expressionism Photography Series, by Dr. Harry Sidebottom’s WARRIOR OF ROME Series. The books following the life of the story’s hero, Marcus Clodius Balista (d. c.261), during the time of Emperor Valerian.

I have always been a student of Ancient Greek and Roman History. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I have always enjoyed learning about these long-dead historical ‘celebrities’.

It isn’t that these art photographs have a mystical connection with the historical figures they are named for—it is just that this is a series designed BECAUSE I have been inspired by Sidebottom’s story, and each artwork needs a title. Thus, each artwork is named after a historical figure from “The Crisis of the Third Century” (2018).

These artworks are Ambidextrous Abstract Expressionism Photography art pieces. By “Ambidextrous”, I mean that they are mirrored images, which usually form some types of figures that can be seen by viewers, as long as the viewer is open to seeing the ghostly and mysterious figures.

Holy Smokes Batman! Don’t talk to me about Passion and Photography!

Yeah…you heard me right.

Please, Don’t talk to me about Passion and Photography!

How many times have you heard, “Photography is my passion“?

Breathing, is my passion.

Ya’know what…I’m not sure I have a passion.

I know I have a madness, that madness, I think, is that I need to Photograph ‘stuff’ if I have a camera in my hands . I also need to create Abstract Expressionism artwork if I have paper and pens at my ready, and some time to use, to create such “mad” artwork.

Sometimes, I DON’T necessarily want to, or love what I am photographing, but I do it because it seems to just be a part of me, and if I have the tools (camera, some light, etc.), so then, the possibility of discovery is there for me. However, photography is not always good for me, and I think therefore, it is more of madness, rather than a passion. Artwork is something that just happens as a result of the Photography Madness, or, Pen-Art Madness. I knew a long time ago that I have an abstract mind. Abstract for me, is a rather good thing. Thus, not all madness is bad.

For these various reasons, and being rather cynical about things in general, is why I question the millions of times people say, “Photography is my Passion,” “Painting is my Passion,” “Dance is my Passion,” “Singing is my Passion,”….Are you sure?

I’m just sort of tired of hearing “Photography” and “Passion” being used in the same sentence. If you take some extra time to think about it, and be more honest with yourself, maybe your artwork of choice, is actually something other than a passion. Or, maybe it is a passion for real, for you.
